Due to the memory requirements of macro virus detection and repair, your copy of Virex may not have sufficient memory to install or use this update. Virex Memory Expander 1.0 is an update utility that increases the memory requirements of the Virex Application and Control Panel. This enables Virex to load recent virus update files that contain a large quantity of macro virus definitions. Virex Memory Expander 1.0 works only with Virex versions 5.6 and later.
Instructions for Virex 5.6 and later
If you have previously applied the Virex Memory Expander 1.0 to your copy of Virex, you do not need to repeat this process with each new Virex Virus Update unless you reinstall Virex.
To use the Memory Expander:
• Copy the Virex Memory Expander to your hard drive (if it is not already there).
• Restart your Macintosh while holding down the "shift" key to disable extensions.
• Make sure that the Virex Application and Control Panel are closed before applying the expander.
• Locate your Virex Application on your hard drive.
• Drag and drop the Virex icon onto the Virex Memory Expander icon.
• Locate the Virex Control Panel in the Control Panels folder within the System Folder.
• Drag and drop the Virex Control Panel icon onto the Virex Memory Expander icon.
• Restart your computer.
If the Virex Memory Expander does not respond when you drag files onto it, or if it does not have the following icon, your Macintosh Desktop file may need rebuilding. Restart the computer while holding down the "command" and "option" keys. The Macintosh OS will prompt you to rebuild the desktop.
You can now apply the latest Virex Virus Update. If you attempted to install the update before applying the Memory Expander, the following error message may have appeared:
"Could not update the virus information from the file "Virex® Virus Update xx_xx_xx because not enough memory is available. -108"
If this dialog appeared, you will need to trash your Virex Virus Definitions file in the Virex Preferences folder, apply the Memory Expander and then double-click on the latest Virex® Virus Update file.
Instructions for Virex 5.5.x
We suggest upgrading your copy of Virex so you can take full advantage of ongoing Virex Virus Updates and important new Virex features. However, you can manually increase the memory allocation for the Virex Application:
• Select the Virex Application icon in the Finder.
• Choose the Get Info item from the Finder's File menu.
• In the Memory Requirements box, change the Minimum size to at least 1500K.
The memory allocation for the Virex 5.5.x Control Panel is not adjustable. If you install this virus update, you may find that the Virex Control Panel cannot load at startup. This will be indicated by a red X through the Virex Control Panel icon that is displayed momentarily during system startup.
